Instruction and Management
My Personal management belief
- Get students engaged because when students are passively learning, very little understanding is happening. I get students engaged by getting students motivated through an exciting introduction and showing interesting images. I also try to pose questions to get them to think deeper about the world around them and how art can be a way to communicate visually.
- I strive for a student-centered classroom where students feel comfortable about sharing their voice. My main goal for the art classroom is to get students to think deeper about what they want to communicate and how they will make their own artistic decisions. Something that I do to make students more willing to share is complimenting students when they have an interesting idea. When students feel more comfortable with the teacher and their peers, they are more willing to participate during class and share their ideas. This also creates a healthy and positive environment, there are no wrong answers when interpreting art, it is all about how we personally relate, every person’s ideas are encouraged and welcome.
- It is extremely important for students to understand safety rules in an art classroom. Sometimes there are dangerous tools that are used. When going over safety, I have students take notes and verbally repeat back to me what the rules are. When going over safety I will demonstrate what the right thing to do is and explain what the consequences are if the rules aren’t followed.
- I organize art tools/materials by table buckets. For whatever materials we are working with, I store these in table buckets and students are responsible for cleaning up and keeping their table buckets neat.
- I implement choice in my lesson plans and pose a challenge for students who are accelerated learners. For example, a challenge that students could choose to try would be to use an object to obscure their still-life. I would offer this challenge to the whole class so that the accelerated learners don’t feel singled out and any student who wants a challenge are able to try. They could use a magnifying glass, or a broken mirror, something that would distort their objects. For students who need accommodation, I would modify the requirements so that they only have to focus on one object to draw rather than three objects.
Instruction and Assessment
In my art classroom, my ultimate goal is to inspire students to be creative and learn about the world around them. To achieve my goal, it is important for me to assess student learning and students to be self-reflective.
Art Instruction and (as) Assessment
-I create lesson plans that where students learn how to work individually, come up with their own ideas and make their own decisions. Art teaches students to be individuals and creative thinkers. The one making the choices is the one doing the learning.
-By implementing critiques in my classroom, students learn how to take critical feedback to improve their practice.
-During each project, students self-reflect on how they are doing well and how they can improve.
-When something doesn’t go their way in the art-making process, I encourage them to have resilience and adaptability, assess the situation, and move forward.
-My classroom encourages risk taking and exploration to discover something new.
-I strive to provide a safe space for students to have a voice and speak their own truth.
-My art classroom has to be collaborative, students will learn how to work together.
-I implement lesson plans that teach about cultural awareness. Students assess their art and the art of others, through the context of a world-view.
-My lesson plans get students to think critically about how to say something by creating a visual artwork. This provides insight into their learning and understanding.
-In my classroom, there is a lot of problem solving. Students ask themselves: how will I make my ideas come to life? Assessment is continuous.
