Teaching Standard 2: Teachers establish a safe, inclusive and respectful learning environment for a diverse population
I am still developing in this area but I am closer to being proficient than I was in the beginning of the semester. During the semester it was hard for me to push students to participate and be engaged during class and tutorials. Due to these struggles, I have reflected on ways that I can develop an inclusive environment by taking advice from current educators from Thompson Valley. For example, one teacher uses the first few weeks to build positive relationships and that is something I will do in my future classroom so that each individual feels respected by me and their fellow classmates. To engage a diverse population of students, I will have a choice-based art curriculum that allows students to make their own artistic decisions. Artifact 1: During AVID tutorials, I built relationships with my group by getting to know everyone and creating an inclusive environment that was safe for anyone to share. Here is a sheet of questions that I used at the beginning of the semester to get to know my group. We would all go around and answer the question of the day and everyone felt comfortable with sharing. Artifact 2: Although there were struggles with AVID like getting everyone to participate, my reflection shows my desire in wanting to create an inclusive environment. My reflection includes details about how I wish I tried harder to push one girl to participate more. This also shows that I will continue to grow as an education in building respectful relationships. |
